Abandoned Mods

If a mod you rely on appears to have been abandoned, the community has a process for taking it over responsibly.

Determine Abandonment

Before proceeding, verify that the mod is indeed abandoned. This typically involves checking for a significant period of inactivity from the original creator, including lack of updates, responses to inquiries, or engagement in the community.

Attempt Contact

  • Make a reasonable effort to contact the original creator to discuss the possibility of taking over the mod. Use multiple channels: DM, pinging, GitHub, and asking staff. Allow a reasonable period for response (e.g. 4 weeks). Loop in the modding Discord staff to make this effort known and to discover any MIA/vacation possibilities.
  • Keep records of all attempts to contact the original creator. Document the dates and methods of communication. If you receive a response, discuss terms for taking over the mod and follow any agreements made.

Obtain Permission and Review License

  • If the original creator responds and agrees, obtain explicit written permission to take over the mod. This permission should be documented and can be done via email or a formal agreement.
  • Examine the mod's license and any associated terms of use. Ensure that taking over the mod complies with its licensing requirements and that you adhere to any conditions set by the original creator.

If Rejected, Pursue Other Avenues

If the developer does not wish for you to take over their project, respect their decision. You may seek alternate solutions:

  • Attempt collaboration via pull requests.
  • Create your own mod: Ensure it is distinct enough to avoid conflict. If you are re-releasing their mod as your own, you will not be supported. Make sure you add something new and distinctive, or have significant improvements and rewrites, along with proper credit and compliance with any existing license.

For Developers

Remember that we are open source, and while abiding by your license, we are here to be sustainable. If you cannot keep your mod updated or be reasonably responsive to pull requests, do consider letting another developer become a maintainer for your work.

Avoid any public disputes or negative comments. Maintaining a respectful and positive environment is essential for keeping the community supportive.

If No Response, Proceed Properly

If you do not receive a response after a reasonable period and have made multiple contact attempts, you may proceed with taking over the mod. Ensure you comply with the mod's license, make it clear in your documentation that the original creator has not been reachable, and fork the repository to preserve history.

Update Documentation and the Community

  • Clearly indicate in the mod's documentation that you are now the maintainer. Provide details about the transition, such as the original creator's name and any relevant history.
  • Announce your assumption of the mod's maintenance to the community. Provide information about your plans for the mod and how you can be contacted for feedback or contributions.

Respect Legacy

  • Continue to respect the contributions of the original creator. Acknowledge their work and all prior credited authors in the mod's credits, and maintain the integrity of their original vision as much as possible.
  • Keep open lines of communication with the community and be transparent about your work on the mod. Encourage feedback and contributions from others to ensure the mod's ongoing development and improvement.
