Mod Monetization
To maintain a strong and collaborative community, all mods should be freely available and open source. Closed-source and private mods create impossible challenges for compatibility, debugging, and technical support. Developers and server operators have expressed frustration over these issues, and in some cases developers have left the scene due to burnout and lack of support. This policy aims to encourage a more open, cooperative modding environment.
Prohibited
- Paid mods, features, or early access.
- Charging for source code or exclusive access.
- Advertising on the Discord (as an existing rule) includes donation links.
- Advertising includes indirect approaches like embedding in media or "link in profile."
- Using forks, readmes, or
funding.ymlto advertise paid access without permission.
Permitted
- Funding the development of open-source mods for the public.
- Including donation links in repositories you originally authored or have permission to use.
- Crediting donors in a readme (e.g., "Sponsors: X person, Y server").
What This Means
- Users and Server Operators: Please consider giving back to our community by not supporting closed source or exclusionary access to mods. You can continue donating to whoever you want.
- Developers: A grace period is in place to adjust any advertising or restricted access practices. We also offer support in learning open-source collaboration tools like pull requests.
- Moderation: Mods violating this policy may be unpublished from #releases, and users will be directed to open-source alternatives. Repeated or intentional violations will result in bans.
This policy is not a punishment or an unchangeable rule, but a step toward fostering a more open, collaborative, and sustainable modding ecosystem. Our goal is to encourage more shared development, better compatibility, and a stronger support network. If you have concerns, feel free to contribute ideas in community feedback. In the future, we hope to explore open-source bounty funding models with proper governance.
TL;DR
Mods should be free and open source.
